Historic port
Evidence of the long history of our natural harbour is abundant. The harbour entrance is guarded by castles dating back to the 15th century on both the Kingswear and Dartmouth banks. The Butterwalk with its timber framed arcade was built in 1635-40 (lower end of Duke Street). Some of the oldest buildings in Dartmouth are on the cobbled waterfront at Bayards Cove where a plaque marks the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers on their way to America aboard the Mayflower and the Speedwell. Some 300 miles west of Lands End, it was apparent that the Speedwell was unseaworthy; they returned to Plymouth from where the Mayflower departed alone to complete the crossing.

Dartmouth Castle and St Petroc's Church
Since 1905, the buildings of the Britannia Royal Naval College have been a dominant feature of both the town and the harbour. The job of the College has always been the same – and is now encapsulated in a mission statement: To train and educate Young Officers to meet the challenging standards of the front line.

And in the 21st century you can enjoy a visit to Dartmouth’s oldest building – the Cherub pub, (c. 1380).

Present day Dartmouth
Dartmouth is not a mere museum-piece; it is a thriving modern town. The recently completed (2005) Flavel Centre is a multi-purpose arts & entertainments venue located in the heart of Dartmouth, offering a cinema, theatre and live music stage, a library and a café.
